1988 Philips Turbo XT Clone - Model NMS9100

The NMS 9100, was first introduced in 1988 by Philips.
Begin ninetees, this was a typical Dutch classroom computer.
The CPU was an i8088-2 that ran at 5MHz or at 8MHz in turbo mode.
Standard the system came with a Philips mono amber monitor.
It had a 720KB and a 1,2MB floppy disk drive, plus a 20MB IDE harddisk.
The BIOS supported 360KB, 720KB and 1,2MB Floppy disk drives.
The system could be upgraded with an i8087 FPU and came with 786KB RAM.
It had many integrated options, like: COM port, Printer port, Floppy
disk drive controller, XT IDE harddisk controller and realtime Clock.
Later versions had a Silicon Valey Computers ADP50L 8bit ISA card
with an IDE controller that worked with AT IDE harddisks.

Philips started building PC's very early.
This picture shows the first Philips PC-XT model.

Switch 5 : ON = Printer port disabled.
Switch 6 : ON = Not used, always OFF.
Switch 7 : ON = COM port disabled.
Switch 8 : ON = Onboard XT IDE port disabled.

Switch 3 : ON plus Switch 4 : ON = 000KB onboard RAM.
Switch 3 : ON plus Switch 4 : OFF = 512KB onboard RAM.
Switch 3 : OFF plus Switch 4 : ON = 256KB onboard RAM.
Switch 3 : OFF plus Switch 4 : OFF = 640KB or more onboard RAM.

An 8Mhz i8088 CPU and right the 768KB onboard soldered RAM.

Video

Standard the system comes with an ATI small wonder CGA card,
but you can also install MDA, EGA, PGA, VGA or SVGA cards.

IDE Hard disk

This is a rare Silicon Valey Computers ADP50L 8bit ISA card,
it is an IDE controller that works with AT IDE harddisks.
The left picture shows a Conner 20MB IDE harddisk.

Floppy disk drives

Two pictures of both 720KB and 1,2MB Floppy disk drives.

The power supply

The PSU looks like an IBM PC PSU, but it is not the same.
Except for the connectors, they are XT/AT compatible.

First try

Trying to get it to work again.
The ATI CGA video card is replaced by an Paradise VGA card.
In the right picture you can see the onboard RAM.
The 128KB RAM above the 640KB RAM can be configured as expanded memory in DOS.

The system starts in "Standard mode",
in this mode the system CPU runs at 5MHz.
In the left picture you see a Philips utility in DOS,
that shows the system in standard mode.
The right picture shows the SysChk diagnose program
with the current clock speed.
